Walk Past Zara This Holiday Season

As Drew Droege would say in his famous Chloe Sevigny YouTube sketches: “It’s recently come to my attenshion” that Zara is using chemicals in their clothing that are directly related to cancer, hormone-disruptions, and environmental degradation when they’re released into eco-systems after clothing production.

Yes, there are probably countless other companies and clothing lines out there that are destroying our water systems with toxic chemicals. And most of us probably have cancer-causing chemicals in the clothes that we wear every day. But with this focus on ZARA, at least it’s a start.image

[From Greenpeace] Nike, Adidas, Puma, H&M, Marks & Spencer, C&A and Li-Ning have all committed to clean up their act and Detox, in response to pressure from concerned consumers, supporters and fashionistas around the globe.

Other top clothing companies still need to respond to the urgency of the situation and Detox, including ZARA – the world’s number one fashion retailer. Their size, power and influence mean that they are crucial to cleaning up the fashion industry. We tested their clothing items and found traces of hazardous chemicals, including some that break down into cancer-causing substances from the breakdown of dyes. ZARA is clearly part of the problem.

This Year: Shop With A Conscience

Most of us have a lot of stuff. Most of us don’t need anymore stuff. This year if you’re shopping for the holidays or asking for gifts, try buying your gifts through one of these groups or asking that your gifts come from one of these groups: Greenpeace, Students for a Free Tibet, the World Society for the Protection of Animals, and Amnesty International. Leave a legacy, not a trail of wrapping paper.
