In my continuing fascination with Russia, I found some sad & unsettling news today. My favourite Russian reporter, who has dedicated so much of her life to documenting & bringing the horrors of Chechnya to the world’s eye, was murdered yesterday. She was also a crucial player & negotiator in the Nord-Ost Theatre Siege in Moscow when I was there in 2002. Her murder is being investigated by Amnesty International.
“A Russian investigative journalist known for her prize-winning coverage of atrocities during the war in Chechnya, Anna Politkovskaya, was found murdered in Moscow on Saturday. A neighbour found Politkovskaya shot dead in the hallway of the building where she lived in the centre of the Russian capital.”
